North East Schools Raise Thousands on World Book Day

Hundreds of Primary Schools throughout the North East raised thousands of pounds for Book Aid by allowing their pupils to dress up as their favourite book characters on World Book Day.

World Book Day encourages the younger generations to read and the whole ethos of the event is made a reality with the involvement and support of publishers, authors and schools. The day, which took place on 3rd March this year, gave pupils an opportunity to enjoy a day which not only involved reading exciting books, but also to raise money for Book Aid.

Primary Schools across the North East celebrated the global event by allowing their pupils to dress up as their favourite book characters, many pupils made a non-uniform donation. These donations make a great difference, as Book Aid send one book to less fortunate children in Africa for every £2 raised, meaning that if every pupil in a school of only 100 donated just £2 for Book Aid, they would have contributed 100 books to the cause.

World Book Day gave £1 tokens for each pupil at all participating schools, pupils could use this token at their local participating bookshop and swap it for one of the following ten new and exclusive books:

  1. ‘Kipper’s Visitor’ by Mick Inkpen
  2. ‘Supertato to the Rescue’ by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet
  3. ‘Daisy and the Trouble With Jack’ by Kes Gray
  4. ‘The Great Mouse Plot’ by Roald Dahl
  5. ‘Welcome to the World of Norm’ by Jonathan Meres
  6. ‘Star Wars: Adventures in Wild Space’ by Cavan Scott
  7. ‘Harper and the Sea of Secrets’ by Cerrie Burnell
  8. ‘The Boy Who Could Do What He Liked’ by David Baddiel
  9. ‘Spot the Difference’ by Juno Dawson
  10. ‘Kindred Spirits by Rainbow Rowell’ by Rainbow Rowell

World Book Day sold 900,000 of their £1 books in 2015 and they are hoping to break that milestone this year once the tokens have expired on Sunday 27th March.
